Adopting a pet, means giving a new home to an animal that has lost the previous owner. There are numerous reasons for why this happens. It might be that the dog or cat run away and cannot find its way back. These cases are not that many and usually the owner will try and find it.

In USA the number of euthanized dogs is around 3-4 million each year. This is the reason for which authorities are trying to convince people to adopt a pet from a shelter rather than buy one, to save as many lives as possible and to spay or neuter the pets, to reduce increasing the number of them.
When taking an animal from the shelter, there are usually some rules and the new possible owner is being checked. The new owner needs to be able to provide a safe environment to the pet and to treat it in a good way.
